Rhode Island Photographer | Theme mini-session

A week ago, I came across an article on the BoredPanda website showcasing hysterical photographs of people dressed up like characters from the old television show - The Little House on the Prairie. Upon further reading, it turns out that there was a new line of dresses at Target that looked very much like colonial garb won by the folks on the show. At first, I was amused, but then I thought “are these dresses really this old-fashioned looking?” Surely the folks in the article must’ve altered them.

So I went to my local target to go check them out and I was floored to discover that these dresses DID indeed look like they were plucked right out of Laura Ingall’s closet. Now I wouldn’t call the dresses hideous per say, but I am astonished that they were marketed as fashionable garb for today’s young lady.

I sent out a call to my friends and former clients to see if they were interested in having an old-shasioned shoot of our own. That not just one, but THREE of my friends brought their children in for this session in the middle of school vacation week is a testament to the rockstar level of the people in my life.

I photographed two middle schoolers and four high schoolers on a blistering cold afternoon at Chase Farm in Lincoln, RI. A parent of one of my models suggested this location. Like a good photographer, I checked out the location online and immediately fell in love with the twin grain silos on the farm. I’d planned to stay there for a few hours, however the grounds were icy, and it was COLD. We lost feeling in our fingers and toes shortly after we began, however, you wouldn’t have been able to tell for all the laughing that was happening. Okay, so maybe I was doing most of the laughing. The second they donned a dress, my models were transformed from your average 21st century teenage into a ruddy-cheeked 18th century young sir and miss. IT WAS UNCANNY. The scene was incredibly perplexing to the folks walking their pets behind us.

We had a grand time! It was something fun to do over winter break and these pictures make for a great memento!
